Malaysiakini plays Santa for Christmas 2011

2011 Chirstmas is a memorable one for the Malaysiakini Team as we decided to collect new and used toys from around Klang Valley to be donated to the UNHCR Refugee Children (United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees). The effort took more than a month. The Malaysiakini Team was after all playing Santa for the first time in years.

As the toys trickled in, the Team sorted the toys accordingly. On the day of delivery, the entire Team was radiating waves of excitement. Whilst Danny and Nick busied themselves with setting up the drum set, Ee Chia waited impatiently to do the drum call. Our very own Santa Maran was donning his famous red suit. Soon there were laughter and cheers ringing through the office.











The Team had to bring along 3 four-wheel drive to accommodate the mountain of toys and the 10 staff who went along.

As we carried the bags of toys up a narrow stair case, we heard loud cheers from 70 Refugee children who waited for their Christmas goodies. The cheers continued even lauder and reached the loudest when Santa appeared singing ‘Ho, Ho, Ho’ in his deep voice. We spend the afternoon distributing toys, taking picture and mingling with the kids.

The day ended with pride in our hearts and smiles carved on our lips. As we departed back to office that day, the Team had a little prayer that Malaysiakini will continue to strive to make the future a better place for everyone, young and old alike, for all our brothers and sisters.
